Gwendolyn Shepherd, a 16-year old student, feels dizzy for the first time during lunch at school. Not soon after, she jumps through time while going out to shop for groceries. At first, she's doubtful about her jump in time, since it has always been her cousin Charlotte destined to have inherited the time travel gene that is passed down through their family, for which she had been prepared for her whole life. She experiences two more uncontrolled jumps through time, during the third of which she witnesses herself, or a doppelgänger of hers, kissing a boy she doesn't even know at a ball in the 1700s, while during the second, she gets chased around her own house in the middle of the night, believed to be a thief. After her third jump, her best friend Lesley convinces her to finally tell her mother, which she does.Her mother, Grace, promptly escorts her to a secret cult, called the lodge of Count Saint Germain (orig. "Loge des Grafen von Saint Germain") and explains her that they are the only ones who can help her with her problem and stop the uncontrolled time jumps. There, the lodge doesn't believe Grace that her daughter has the time travel gene, since Gwendolyn was born on the wrong day and Grace confesses to having convinced the delivery nurse to counterfeit the birth documents, with the explanation that her family was a bunch of sadists and wants to sacrifice children born on the seventh of October. The nurse believed them and did as she was asked out of pity. The lodge is skeptical, but are willing to wait for Gwendolyn to jump through time again, to confirm that she has in fact inherited the time travel gene. Not soon after this decision, Gwendolyn really does travel through time once more. Gwendolyn is now finally acknowledged as the final time traveler, the twelfth, the Ruby.
